Halloween Tails and Tales

The cutest tail-sporting trick-or-treaters this Halloween:

Then there's the tale of the rudest person to come to my door this evening. For some reason at one point, I told a few trick or treaters they take a "couple" of things from the candy bowl. An older boy reached his grubby hands right in and grabbed 3 of the biggest item available, of which there weren't many left: Reeses cups. I called him out, "dude, you totally just grabbed 3 Reeses cups!" He just laughed and turned away, keeping the candy for himself. His friend said, "I want 3 Reeses cups." No way, not happening. Snatchy spoiled rude kids.

To Be Precise

After getting home from the movies Friday night, T and I couldn't help but step out into the driveway to admire the full moon, which was extremely bright.

Me: I think that's the brightest moon I've ever seen.
T: Isn't that the only moon you've ever seen?

Weekend at the Movies

Really, it's only 2 evenings at the movies, but "weekend" sounded better. Last night, at T's suggestion, we saw Across the Universe. Have ya'll seen this flick yet? I'd be interested in your thoughts. I'll admit that though I love music, I'm in general not a big fan of musicals, so while I promise I kept an open mind, I wasn't "wow-ed" by this movie. Most of the music was great, and the film as a whole was entertaining and incredibly imaginative. Several numbers, though, were just a little too "out there" for me. It certainly wasn't a waste of time, but I can close to guarantee I'll never watch it again.

Tonight I'm planning to see Michael Clayton. This is more up my alley as far as movies go: suspense, drama, intrigue, and set in the world of corporate law, to boot. I'd already planned to see it and then my Dad told me that both he and my Mom thought it was fantastic. I'll report back tomorrow.

I Love Peyton

Let me begin by saying I love Peyton - you know, in that way you can "love" someone you've never met. What's not to love? He's not classically handsome, but so many features combine to make him appealing: his talent, skill, sense of humor, work ethic, and the countless good deeds he does for people in Indianapolis and elsewhere. Given the way he conducts himself in public, combined with his fantastic success with the Colts, we are lucky to have him representing our city to millions of people across the country and throughout the world.

That said, I would just like to submit the following for your consideration. Isn't Peyton a little overexposed? Just a tad? I don't mind seeing him pop up in every commercial (okay, maybe every third commercial), but I'm guessing there may be folks out there who take a different view of his omnipresence.

Alphabet Soup

Often, when I am trying to think of a word, especially the name of something or someone, I "do the alphabet." You know, I briefly conjure up each letter of the alphabet in my mind, thinking about it for a moment, trying to get a sense of whether that letter starts or is perhaps contained in the name I'm trying to recall. I linger over some letters, sure they hold the key to unlocking the mystery, and quickly skip over others, knowing they are in no way involved in the name escaping me at that moment. This used to be a sure fire method of remembering names that I once knew.

No more; the alphabet trick has lost its magic for me of late. My brain is either overloaded, turning to mush, or obstinately refusing to allow me to access the information within on my own terms. This is not a good thing.

  • Locked doors that are supposed to be unlocked.
  • The so called "battery" on my cell phone/blackjack.
  • Some irritating Verisoft Sign-on software on my new laptop that asks me every time I enter a username and password whether I want it to remember the "credentials" I entered. No, no I do not.

Tips (worth what you paid for them)

On decorating with fake spider webs: Less is more.

On raking: Don't do it when it is windy outside and/or you are hungover.

On 16-year-old daughters with a car at their disposal: They are never home.

Early Bird

I'm not particularly fond of worms, and yet I got up way earlier than I really wanted to this morning. No rest for the weary and all that.

I'm about to pay a mountain of bills that have piled up in the last couple of weeks. Then it's off to run errands and prep for a Halloween party the associates at my firm are putting on tonight. It should be fun and I'm looking forward to it.

For those of you in Indy, I hope you get to enjoy the great weather we're predicted to have this weekend. It's 9am and already sunny outside. I hope to do some raking tomorrow and plant a few mums. (I've killed 3 mums already this season and I'm really hoping to get some in the ground before the window to do so closes; I want them to come back up next year).

Several of my neighbors are likely to keel over in shock when they see me and then when it registers with them that I am actually doing yardwork. I plan to have medics on standby.

Michael's Angels (2007)

Yep, That's My Sister

My older sister Mickie is in town this weekend to visit and because yesterday was our annual family reunion. Friday evening, several of us were hanging out at my parents' house.

Mickie (handing a deck of cards to her bf): We could play some cards.
Mickie's Man: I don't think this is a full deck.
K (making an unprompted confession for the amusement of others): You know, it hasn't been that many years since I would get confused between the number of cards in a deck and the number of states in the U.S.
Mickie: Why? They both have 52!!!

She Means Ancient

A teenager called in to a local radio station this morning, having switched over from another local station, and the DJ asked her what kind of music she likes.

Teen Caller: Old stuff.
DJ: Oh, like Kid Rock or something?
Teen Caller: No, like really old.
Me: (thinking she probably listens to the Beatles and other similar artists)
Teen Caller: No, really old like Prince.
Me: (stunned) Really old like Prince??!!??
T: He has been around for a long time, Mom.

Behind the Wheel

I plan to spend a little time here waxing philosophical about having a daughter who can now drive about the city on her own. I've been lamenting for the past few days about the drastic changes our lives have undergone and are going to continue to undergo.

There has also been much lamentation about my spur of the moment decision last week to buy another car. Especially once I, an attorney, sat down tonight and read the terms of some of the documents I signed last Wednesday.

But for now, I simply invite you to enjoy with me pictures of T in "our second car":

(The car is a Toyota RAV4, 2001, with 89K miles on it. Details to follow for those who might be curious. That said, if you tell me what a bad deal I made, I'll make it my life's mission to make your life miserable. No haters.)

Sunday Fun

Go Colts!!! Abstaining from the family's fantasy football league has been incredibly liberating. It was a good decision and maybe I can get back in the swing of things next year. Or maybe not.

Below are some pics of my sweet nieces, taken recently at my parents' house. Try not to smile.

Fresh Fruit

Is it sad that when I smell a fresh orange I think, "Mmmmmm.....Blue Moon"?

"I have my pants in one hand and my drink in the other"

I'm back and in one piece. As one partner at my firm put it, the men in Vegas are safe again. Truth be told, it was a pretty tame trip, at least by my standards - and I assume by Vegas standards as well.

I had to behave the first two nights because I was there for a conference. The next night, I saw KA with my parents. It was a fantastic show: truly a spectacle, and one I highly recommend. Kelly P., we debated the presence of a plot as we left the show. My position is, there were certainly at least plot "threads," including a couple of love stories. My Dad didn't really agree. Regardless, it was wonderful and we all enjoyed it.

Saturday, I met some friendly folks at the pool and joined them for a little dancing fun later that night, after a fantastic dinner. We had a great time and we plan to stay in touch. I have to admit I was surprised when last call came at about 2:45am, though; I felt like I was in Indianapolis. Next time out I'll have to hit the REAL party spots. The up side is that I returned to Indy able to function (albeit after a morning nap since I didn't get to bed last night until about 4am).

Here's a snippet of hanging out in Vegas with my folks. After KA, we walked to the Monte Carlo for dinner at Diablo's Cantina. We were told the wait would be an hour and 20 minutes. I came up with the ingenious plan of getting yard-long margaritas and then walking to Bellagio's to watch a water show. Dad, who had 2 enormous (and potent) margaritas at KA, passed on a yard-long. This exchange followed as we walked:

K: Dad, your pants are way too big for you; you're wasting away! (He's lost over 50 lbs since March).
Kelly's Dad: Great pun!
K: Why, because you're wasted?
Kelly's Mom: (Stops walking for a moment and bends over with laughter)
Kelly's Dad: Very funny. Because my waist is getting smaller!
